Donna North High School rising senior Alexa Olvera spent her summer developing her leadership skills through two prestigious educational programs that provided opportunities to engage with students, professionals, and civic leaders from across the nation.

In June, Olvera participated in the 2026 Leadership in Action Youth Tour, traveling to Austin and Washington, D.C. Throughout the program, she visited historic landmarks, met with members of Congress, and gained firsthand insight into the legislative process and the responsibilities of government leaders. The experience gave students a deeper understanding of civic engagement, public service, and leadership while encouraging them to become active participants in their communities.

In July, Olvera represented Donna North High School at the National Hispanic Institute (NHI) Collegiate World Series, hosted at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. The Collegiate World Series is NHI's flagship leadership program, bringing together high achieving students from across the United States and Latin America to collaborate on complex issues, participate in public policy simulations, strengthen communication skills, and develop innovative solutions through teamwork and critical thinking.

During the weeklong program, Olvera earned the Major League Award, an honor presented to participants who demonstrate exceptional collaboration, leadership, and a positive influence on their peers throughout the Thought Series. The award recognizes students whose commitment, teamwork, and contributions help elevate the success of their group.

Through both experiences, Olvera strengthened her leadership, communication, and critical thinking skills while building relationships with students from diverse backgrounds and exploring future educational opportunities.
