Donna ISD students are proving the power of literacy and bilingual learning on the regional stage. In the district’s first-ever participation in the UTRGV Batalla de los Libros competition, Mighty Muñoz Elementary delivered a historic performance, earning the 2026 championship title.

The journey began on March 12, when Mighty Muñoz claimed first place at Donna ISD’s inaugural Batalla de los Libros competition, advancing to represent the district at the university level. On Saturday, March 28, the team rose to the occasion once again, competing against schools from across the region and bringing home the UTRGV championship.

Batalla de los Libros challenges students in Spanish literacy, comprehension, and analysis, highlighting the strength of Donna ISD’s bilingual programs and the academic opportunities available to students. Through this competition, students demonstrate language proficiency, critical thinking, teamwork, and confidence.

The championship team, Jenika Barrientos, Alisson Villarreal, Marina Sandoval, and Victoria Cuellar, was guided by coach Melva Bernal, whose dedication and preparation helped lead this group to success. Throughout both competitions, the students showcased strong content knowledge, poise, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

This milestone marks a first for Donna ISD and reflects the impact of intentional instruction, strong bilingual programming, and the commitment of educators who continue building meaningful learning experiences for students.

Mighty Muñoz’s achievement is more than a win. It reflects students building the skills and confidence to succeed in multiple languages and beyond the classroom.

Congratulations to Mighty Muñoz for making history and representing Donna ISD with excellence.
