Donna ISD Breaks Ground on New Classroom Wings at Three Elementary Campuses

Donna Independent School District continues to invest in early childhood education with the announcement of new classroom wings at Salazar, Garza, and Singleterry Elementary Schools. Groundbreaking ceremonies for these additions took place on September 17th, with district and campus leaders, board members, and representatives from ROFA Architects and ECON Group Construction in attendance. Funded by the successful $120 million bond passed in May 2023, this initiative marks a significant milestone in Donna ISD's mission of "Building a Legacy One Student at a Time."

The expansions are designed to accommodate the district's anticipated growth on the north side, with each wing adding approximately 17,500 square feet at a cost of around $6 million per school. These new spaces will house 10 additional classrooms, primarily focusing on Pre-K, kindergarten, and special education. Each wing will include six Pre-K classrooms, three discovery rooms, one special education classroom, as well as a conference room and workroom. A key feature is the secure vestibule entrance, underscoring the district's commitment to safety.

Superintendent Dr. Angela Dominguez expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This project is about building a lasting legacy for our future. Today’s groundbreakings are the culmination of extensive planning and collaboration with our architects and design teams. I’m excited about the tremendous opportunities these new facilities will bring to our youngest learners, and I know the community will share in this excitement."

Dr. Dominguez also noted that the new wings will mirror the successful early childhood approach seen at M. Rivas Primary Discovery Academy. “We are proud to house the #1 early childhood center in Texas at M. Rivas Primary Discovery Academy, which earned the H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award. Our innovative discovery rooms, designed for play-based learning, will now be extended to Salazar, Garza, and Singleterry, ensuring that our 3, 4, and 5-year-old students receive the same high-quality, development-focused education.”

Barring weather delays or unforeseen construction challenges, the project is expected to be completed within a year. “We’re hopeful that within a year, we’ll be opening the doors to these new classrooms,” said Dr. Dominguez. “These expansions are not just about adding buildings; they’re about providing a strong foundation for our children—especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Early learning sets the stage for future success.”

In addition to the elementary school expansions, Donna ISD is undertaking several other major projects funded by the bond. Donna North High School will receive a new wing with 30 classrooms, eliminating portable buildings and improving safety. Donna High School will see upgrades to the cafeteria and the addition of new classrooms, similarly enhancing student safety. Further improvements will be made to the gymnasium and library at A.P. Solis and Todd Middle Schools, with expansions at Veterans and Sauceda Middle Schools also in the works.

“As our district grows, these projects represent our commitment to giving students and families the best facilities and opportunities,” Dr. Dominguez added. “A strong foundation in early childhood education is crucial to preparing our students for success in college, career, or the military.”
