Donna High Teacher Juan Carmona and Co-Author Release New Book on Queen Isabella Causeway Collapse
Donna High School Social Studies teacher Juan Carmona, alongside co-author Robert Espericueta, has just released a compelling new book titled The Queen Isabella Causeway Collapse, on September 2, 2024, through Arcadia Publishing. This captivating account brings to life the tragedy that struck the Rio Grande Valley just days after the September 11 attacks, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
On September 15, 2001, a towboat pushing four barges collided with the Queen Isabella Causeway, the only bridge connecting South Padre Island to the mainland. The impact caused a section of the bridge to collapse, sending several vehicles into the water below. Nine people lost their lives in the disaster. In the midst of the chaos, four young men in their twenties, who were night fishing in the area, witnessed the catastrophe unfold. One of these men, Robert Espericueta, who owned the boat, and his companions heroically worked to save lives. Despite the shock of what they had just witnessed, they managed to rescue three people from the water.
Carmona’s book delves into this extraordinary story of courage and tragedy, exploring the harrowing rescue efforts and the community's fear that the incident could be linked to terrorism, given its proximity to the 9/11 attacks.
The Queen Isabella Causeway Collapse tells the story of these brave rescuers and the broader context of the disaster, including the initial fear that the collapse was part of a terrorist attack. Carmona and Espericueta's narrative honors the courage and resilience displayed during this moment of crisis, highlighting the human spirit’s capacity for heroism. Reflecting on his experience, Carmona stated, “Interviewing one of the survivors was incredibly emotional. The fear and pain were palpable, and it made me appreciate the resilience of those involved.”
Together, Carmona and Espericueta have held several book signing appearances, engaging with the community to share their story and honor the lives affected by this tragedy.
