Four Donna High School Students Selected for McCombs School of Business Subiendo Academy

Donna High School is proud to announce that four of its outstanding students, Estefani Lopez, Sayra Ortiz, Violet Mireles, and Natalie Castillo, have been selected to participate in the prestigious Subiendo Academy at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. The Subiendo Academy, scheduled for June 9-13, 2024, is a five-day summer leadership program designed to equip young leaders with the skills necessary to address the needs of the next generation by solving real-world issues in healthcare, energy/environment, and education.

The Subiendo Academy offers an immersive experience where students gain leadership skills through training and team-building exercises, network with prominent business and political figures, engage in project-based learning to analyze current policy issues, and attend communications workshops to enhance their presentation skills at the state capitol. The program also provides valuable insights into college life, including on-campus living in residence halls, and mentoring from accomplished community and student leaders.

Natalie Castillo expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating, "I am excited about the diversity and the real-life college experience the program offers. However, I am most excited about the opportunity to be surrounded by amazing peers and staff who are more than qualified to be in a leadership position. During this week, I am hoping to learn new ways to become a leader not only in the classroom but also within the community."

Estefani Lopez shared her anticipation, saying, "I look forward to learning from top business and political leaders and bringing those insights back to our community." Sayra Ortiz emphasized the program's unique opportunities, "The chance to work on real-world problems and present solutions at the state capitol is incredibly exciting." Violet Mireles highlighted the program's long-term impact, "Being part of the Subiendo Academy means joining a network of leaders that will support me throughout my career."

English teacher Evert Villarreal, who wrote letters of recommendation for the students, expressed his pride in their accomplishments. "These students have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and a strong commitment to their education. Their selection for the Subiendo Academy is a testament to their hard work and potential. I am confident they will make the most of this opportunity and return with invaluable experiences to share with their peers."

The Donna High School community congratulates Estefani, Sayra, Violet, and Natalie on their selection and wishes them a transformative experience at the Subiendo Academy.
