Excitement Builds as Donna ISD Breaks Ground on New Two-Story Classroom Wing at Donna North High School

Excitement filled the air as the Donna Independent School District celebrated a major milestone on Friday, February 28, with a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction on a highly anticipated two-story classroom wing at Donna North High School. The $15.75 million project will add 30 new classrooms, providing students with a safer, more modern, and enhanced learning environment while addressing the district’s growing enrollment.

The ceremony brought together district and community leaders, including the Donna ISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Angela Dominguez, Donna North High School Principal Dr. Paz Elizondo, representatives from Gerlach Builders and Alvarado Architects & Associates, Inc., as well as district and campus administrators and staff.

Superintendent Dominguez highlighted the district’s dedication to investing in high-quality learning spaces that prioritize both student success and well-being.

“This expansion represents Donna ISD’s ongoing commitment to providing students with safe, modern, and innovative learning spaces,” said Dr. Dominguez. “With the addition of this two-story classroom wing, we are eliminating the need for outdoor portable classrooms and ensuring that students can learn in a secure, climate-controlled permanent environment that fosters academic achievement.”

The new two-story wing will allow all students to remain inside the main building, a significant improvement that enhances campus security and shields students from extreme weather conditions, such as excessive heat, cold, and heavy rain.

Additionally, this expansion is in direct response to the growing development of new subdivisions in the city’s northside. As the population in this area continues to increase, the new classrooms will help accommodate the future growth of Donna ISD, ensuring that all students have access to safe and modern learning spaces for years to come.

Donna North High School Principal Dr. Paz Elizondo emphasized the positive impact this expansion will have on students' daily routines and overall experience.

“Our students are thrilled about this expansion because it means they will no longer have to walk outside to portable classrooms, which often led to delays between classes and exposure to the elements,” said Dr. Elizondo. “This new two-story wing not only improves safety and security but also creates a more cohesive learning environment, allowing students and teachers to interact more efficiently without disruptions.”

The project is part of a larger district-wide initiative funded by the $120 million bond passed in May 2023, which is dedicated to critical infrastructure improvements across Donna ISD. Several outdoor learning spaces have already been completed at elementary campuses, and additional projects are scheduled to break ground in the coming months.

“This is just one of the many projects we have underway to enhance our campuses and provide the best possible learning experience for our students,” added Dr. Dominguez. “We are grateful to our community for supporting the bond that is making these transformative improvements possible.”

Construction on the new two-story Donna North High School classroom wing is expected to progress over the coming months, with updates to be provided as the project moves forward.
