On Friday, February 28th, the Donna Independent School District hosted a special celebration for teachers who were selected as Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) designees at the Donna High School Marching Band Hall. The event, which transported attendees to a magical world, featured a Harry Potter theme that created a truly unforgettable experience.
The Band Hall was transformed into a scene straight out of the beloved movie franchise, complete with fog from a fog machine, laser lights, and whimsical decorations to enhance the magical ambiance. Teachers were transported from the school library to the event aboard electronic trains resembling the Hogwarts Express, a fitting tribute to the world of wizardry.
Superintendent Dr. Angela Dominguez, along with her administration team, welcomed the teachers, all of whom were dressed in Harry Potter-inspired costumes, to the celebration.
“We wanted this event to reflect the magic our teachers bring to their classrooms every day,” said Dr. Dominguez. "We are incredibly proud to honor our high-performing educators who consistently go above and beyond to ensure student success. The Teacher Incentive Allotment is not only a well-deserved financial reward but also a lasting recognition of their excellence, as this designation stays with them throughout their careers. It serves as a testament to the measurable growth they foster in the classroom and the profound impact they have on the academic success and well-being of our students. The TIA designation allows us to invest in our greatest resource—our educators—who continue to inspire, motivate, and empower the next generation of leaders."
Upon entering, teachers selected as TIA designees were handed a wand and a box containing a sorting hat. Inside the box, they discovered the color that would designate their level: yellow for the Master level, green for Exemplary level, and purple for Recognized level.
Following Dr. Dominguez’s instructions, teachers were asked to wave their wands and count down “one, two, three,” as banners representing the three categories—yellow, green, and purple—unfurled, revealing the teachers' designations. Confetti rained down on the attendees as excitement and emotion filled the room. Tears, hugs, and cheers were seen as each teacher learned their TIA designation.
In total, 53 teachers were recognized during the event, with six of them improving their level of designation from last year to this year, showcasing the continuous growth and commitment of Donna ISD Educators. Below is the breakdown of the designations and corresponding financial benefits:
· Master (6 teachers) – $12,000 - $32,000
· Exemplary (26 teachers) – $6,000 - $18,000
· Recognized (21 teachers) – $3,000 - $9,000
To celebrate the achievements of all 53 honorees, we asked one teacher from each designation level to share their thoughts on what the recognition meant to them. A.P. Solis 6th Grade Math Teacher Reynaldo Garcia was thrilled to learn he had earned the Master designation. “This is the first time I’ve ever received a distinction, and to earn the highest level is truly rewarding,” said Garcia. “It’s a life-changing experience, and knowing that this recognition will last for five consecutive years makes it even more meaningful.”
Munoz Elementary 5th Grade Math Teacher Laura Cerda, who was honored with the Exemplary designation, shared her excitement: “This is my very first time being recognized, and it’s such an amazing feeling,” said Cerda. “The long hours and dedication I’ve put into my work have been acknowledged. This district truly values the efforts of its teachers, and the training we receive is being passed on to our students, helping them thrive under the guidance of highly qualified educators.”
Veterans Middle School Reading Interventionist Dr. Orlando Botello expressed his pride in receiving the Recognized distinction. “I’m incredibly proud because this recognition reflects the hard work that my colleagues and I put in every day,” said Dr. Botello. “It’s a great accomplishment, and it will make a significant impact—not only on my life but also on those around me. It’s inspiring to show that we can achieve great things in this district.”
After the momentous announcement, teachers were honored with a reception, where they were treated to a variety of appetizers, providing a chance to celebrate and socialize with colleagues and district leaders.
This magical evening served as a reminder of the dedication, hard work, and passion that teachers bring to the classroom, creating a lasting impression on everyone involved.
