The Donna Independent School District is taking bold steps toward redefining educational excellence with the announcement of three new specialized academies set to launch in the 2025-2026 school year. This exciting transformation is part of the district’s ongoing commitment to “Building a Legacy,” focusing on innovation, opportunity, and community-driven growth. The new campuses will specialize in fine arts, science, and sports, and will be located in their existing buildings, with a renewed focus on these specialty areas to foster creativity, curiosity, and teamwork.
These initiatives stem from a comprehensive effort by Donna ISD’s Innovation Design Team, a diverse group consisting of teachers and administrators. Their objective was to evaluate enrollment patterns, operational needs, and community aspirations. After months of research, campus visits, and parent surveys, the district is introducing specialized learning opportunities designed to inspire and engage students while preparing them for future success.
“We are excited to launch these innovative programs and continue building a legacy of excellence for our students and community,” said Dr. Angela Dominguez, Superintendent of Donna ISD. “The new specialized academies will provide students with tailored learning experiences that will cultivate their passions and equip them with the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world. These academies will not only serve our current students but will also set the foundation for future generations.”
Dr. Dominguez further emphasized, “We are committed to offering a robust educational experience where students can thrive both academically and creatively. This transformation will ensure that our students have access to learning environments that are innovative, secure, and enriching, allowing them to pursue their passions while developing critical life skills.”
The New Specialized Academies:
Fine Arts Focus: J.S. Adame Arts Academy J.S. Adame Elementary will be reimagined as the J.S. Adame Arts Academy, serving PreK 3 through 5th grade students. This campus will provide an arts-rich education designed to inspire creativity and foster self-expression. Programs will include music (piano, guitar, mariachi, drumline, choir), visual arts (drawing, painting, digital art, sculpture), theatre (musical theatre, creative drama, set design), and dance (ballet, dance team, folklórico). Students will engage in artistic expression that helps them communicate through movement, music, and visual art, preparing them for future academic and artistic pursuits.
Science and Sports Focus: A.M. Ochoa Primary Science and Sports Academy A.M. Ochoa Elementary will be transformed into the A.M. Ochoa Primary Science and Sports Academy, serving PreK 3 through 2nd grade students. As the first of its kind in Texas, this academy will spark curiosity in students by integrating environmental science and engineering with hands-on activities. Students will benefit from an outdoor learning center with a schoolyard forest, trees, and interactive learning spaces. In sports, they will participate in activities such as soccer, flag football, t-ball, and daily physical education, promoting motor skill development, teamwork, and healthy habits.
Following their time at Ochoa, students will continue their science and sports education at the soon-to-be-established C. Stainke Intermediate Science and Sports Academy (3rd-5th grade). This academy will build on Ochoa's foundation with more advanced science education and outdoor learning, complemented by enhanced green spaces and problem-based engineering tasks that promote critical thinking and collaboration. Physical education will focus on skills development and teamwork through athletics and health curricula, helping students strengthen both physically and academically.
The concept for Ochoa and Stainke was inspired by the success of Donna ISD’s award-winning M. Rivas Primary Discovery Academy (PreK 3-2nd grade), which was recognized as the H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award recipient for the state of Texas. Since its inception, M. Rivas has experienced tremendous success, including an enrollment increase of over 100 students. From M. Rivas, students transition to the neighboring Caceres Intermediate Discovery Academy (3rd-5th grade), where growth is also anticipated. This proven model of success has guided the development of Ochoa and Stainke, ensuring that students in Donna ISD continue to benefit from innovative, high-quality educational opportunities.
“These new specialized campuses represent a new wave of educational innovation in our district,” Dr. Dominguez added. “By aligning education with students’ interests and passions, we’re not only improving academic outcomes but also preparing them to be leaders in fields such as the arts, science, and sports.”
These new additions join Donna ISD’s existing network of four specialized campuses, bringing the total to seven. Together, they create a dynamic educational system designed to inspire students by offering them access to programs tailored to their unique talents and ambitions. The launch of these academies will take place at the start of the 2025-2026 school year, providing ample time for preparation to ensure a smooth transition for students, staff, and families. Looking ahead, Donna ISD remains dedicated to researching additional specialty campus opportunities, continuing its mission to provide innovative, high-quality educational experiences for all students.
